Greg Sametz: Biography
Greg Sametz has been actively involved in second language instruction for more than four decades. He began his teaching career in the Brandon School Division in 1974 as a Senior High French Specialist. A move eastward to the Portage la Prairie School Division found Greg in the classroom teaching Basic French at the Junior High level. He later assumed the role of French Language Coordinator when the division implemented French Immersion programming. As a final career move Greg accepted an administrative position in a brand new dual-track school in Seven Oaks School Division. In his twenty years in Seven Oaks Greg truly enjoyed his role as both vice-principal and principal in a milieu and dual track schools. He retired from Seven Oaks in 2007 as Director of Language Programs in a growing school division. He was instrumental in establishing the adult EAL program in this multi-culturally diverse school division.
Throughout his career, Greg has proudly served on many BEF curriculum committees (final committee writing the "a vos marques, prets, partez!" document). He has presented many conference workshops at both the provincial and national level. He has served as Manitoba representative on the board of the Canadian Association of Second Language Teachers (CASLT), the Canadian Language Network and the Canadian Languages Association. He is proud to be a life-time member of MATF.
In his post retirement years, Greg has been able to continue to nurture his love and passion for second language learning. He presently works with pre-service educators enrolled in the Faculty of Education at the University of Manitoba. He has worked as evaluator and consultant for the French Intensif program and the national Odyssey Explore program. He enjoys working with advanced and introductory senior French students at Creative Retirement Manitoba. Greg is particularly excited about his recent work with both students and teachers in their classrooms around the province as "animateur culturel", offering workshops in playing wooden spoons (Jouons les cuilleres). He is always happy to be invited to MAFT's "Apprendre en faisant" Day.
